News Highlights

George Aslandi, PhD, Publishes Research that Could Lead to Development of Melanoma Vaccine

Melanoma is the deadliest type of skin cancer, causing thousands of deaths in the U.S. per year. George Aslandi, PhD, and Professor in the Molecular Bioengineering and Cancer Vaccine research department along with a team of scientists at the Hormel Institute at the University of Minnesota, published research that could lead to the development of a vaccine to melanoma. The team developed and tested a vaccine designed to help the body’s immune system identify and kill cancer cells. The treatment could simplify melanoma treatment and minimize the need for more toxic treatments such as chemotherapy.

The 2023 Seed Grant was awarded to Dr. Deanna Teoh, with co-investigators Martin Origa and Yusuf Mulumba from the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) and Rahel Ghebre from the University of Minnesota.

The funded project focuses on increasing cervical cancer screening among attendants at the Uganda Cancer Institute and their peer network. The funded project includes two main aims, to determine the efficacy of providing group education to female attendants of patients admitted to UCI to increase cervical cancer screening; and to assess the feasibility of disseminating cervical cancer and screening education to female contacts of UCI attendants via additional mobile health communication. The project is focused specifically on increasing screening through health information sharing. The educational intervention is able to be adequately tested at UCI where women have free access to screening. This research will inform future interventions for Uganda, while also informing interventions for immigrant communities in Minnesota.
